AC freezing up

Ice on the indoor unit or the lines. Switch the system off first, then start here.

Check these first

  1. Turn the system off at the thermostat and let the ice melt.
  2. Check the air filter.
  3. Make sure the outdoor unit is clear of debris.
  4. Don't run the system until the ice is gone.

Still not working? That's a job for a pro.

When to call a pro

The problem is still there after these checks. Anything inside the unit is a job for a pro.

Questions

Why is my AC freezing up?

The most common reason is weak airflow over the indoor cooling coil. A clogged filter, blocked return vents or a dirty coil can cause it. Low refrigerant and thermostat problems can also be behind it, and those are a job for a technician.

What should I do if my AC unit is frozen?

Go to your thermostat and switch the system from cool to off. Do not chip at the ice, since that can damage the equipment. Then call an HVAC company to look at it.

How long does it take for a frozen AC to thaw?

Turn the AC off and let the ice melt. Carrier says a lightly frosted unit may take a few hours and heavy ice can take much longer. Once thawed, the cause still needs to be found, so a technician may need to check it.

Can a dirty air filter cause an AC to freeze?

Yes. A clogged or dirty filter is listed as a leading cause, because it limits the air moving over the cold coil. Changing a dirty filter is a simple fix you can do yourself; other causes need a technician.

Is it safe to run the AC when it is frozen?

No. Running the system with ice on it can seriously damage your air conditioner. Switch the thermostat from cool to off, let the ice melt, and call a heating and cooling company if it keeps happening.
