Why the numbers differ
Each guide uses its own method. Some base their estimates on other sites, such as Angi and HomeAdvisor, and say so on their pages. Two guides can quote different numbers for the same repair, so we show them side by side instead of one average.
Questions
Is it worth repairing an old AC or furnace?
ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement if a heat pump or air conditioner is over 10 years old, a furnace over 15, or equipment needs frequent repairs while bills rise. Ask your contractor to weigh repair against replacement.

Why is my energy bill so high?
Heating and cooling use nearly half of a home's energy. Common causes include a dirty filter, leaky ducts and aging, less efficient equipment. A clean filter and a professional check-up are good places to start.

How long do AC units and furnaces last?
No fixed lifespan applies to every system. ENERGY STAR advises considering replacement when a heat pump or air conditioner is over 10 years old, or a furnace or boiler is over 15. Maintenance affects how long equipment lasts.

Does regular maintenance help equipment last longer?
ENERGY STAR says dirty coils make an air conditioner run longer, raising energy use and shortening equipment life. Yearly check-ups and monthly filter checks are the basic upkeep it recommends.
