Emergency AC repair
AC down in the heat? Start with the basics.
Check these first
- Thermostat is set to Cool and the target is below room temperature.
- Replace the thermostat batteries if it has any.
- Check the air filter. A clogged one can block airflow.
- Clear leaves and debris from around the outdoor unit.
Still not working? That's a job for a pro.
When to call a pro
The problem is still there after these checks. Anything inside the unit is a job for a pro.
Questions
What should I do while the AC is down in extreme heat?
Go to a place that has air conditioning, such as a cooling center. Dial 2-1-1 or call your local health department to find one. Drink plenty of fluids, take cool showers or baths, and check on neighbors. Fans help only below 90°F indoors.

How can I tell if AC trouble is an emergency?
The emergency is how people feel. Confusion, slurred speech, fainting, seizures or a very high body temperature can mean heat stroke. Call 911 right away. A broken AC alone is a repair call, but heat illness is a medical emergency.

Who is most at risk when the AC is out in a heat wave?
Older adults, young children and people with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk. If someone in your home is in one of these groups, move them to a cooler place sooner rather than later, and check on neighbors who live alone.
