Questions
Why is my furnace making noise?
ENERGY STAR lists a noisy heating or cooling system as a sign of a problem, such as undersized ducts or an issue with the indoor coil of cooling equipment. Because causes vary, have a technician diagnose furnace noise instead of opening the unit yourself.

What should I do if I smell gas?
Leave your home immediately and contact your gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not use lights, phones or other electronics before leaving. Do not try to find the source or repair the furnace yourself.

How often should a furnace be serviced?
The CDC says to have your heating system serviced by a qualified technician every year. Yearly service also helps catch problems that can let carbon monoxide build up in the home.

Can a furnace cause carbon monoxide problems?
Yes. The CDC lists gas- and oil-burning furnaces among household items that produce carbon monoxide, an odorless, colorless gas. Keep working CO alarms in your home and have the furnace serviced every year.
