Questions

Why is my heat pump not heating?

Make sure the thermostat is in Heat mode and the filter is clean. Warning signs listed by the Department of Energy include a unit that runs constantly or cycles on and off, a set temperature that is never reached, or frozen coils. If you see these, call a qualified HVAC professional.

Why is my heat pump icing up?

In freezing weather the outdoor coil may get a bit frosted and then clear itself. Make sure the meltwater does not pool and refreeze on a walkway. If the outdoor or indoor coils stay frozen, call a qualified HVAC professional.

Is it normal for a heat pump to blow cool air?

Sometimes, briefly. During a defrost cycle, ducted systems may switch on supplemental heat, and ductless indoor units may put off some cooling. If the air stays cool or the room never warms, have a professional check it.

Why does heat pump air feel less hot than furnace air?

Heat pumps deliver a steady, gentle flow of warm air and run well when operating continuously, while fuel-fired systems blow hot air for shorter periods. Gentle air alone is not a fault, but see a professional if rooms never warm up.

How long does a heat pump last?

An air source heat pump typically lasts about 15 years, depending on the type and how well it is maintained. Regular filter changes and servicing every one to two years help keep it running well.
